GIFTSNC - For those home schooling children with learning challenges

GIFTSNC is a special place for parents in North Carolina who homeschool one or more children with physical, developmental, medical, communication or learning challenges. GIFTSNC is the place to discuss and exchange ideas regarding: curriculum choices and modifications, medical and therapy issues, providing social opportunities and so much more. GIFTSNC is a place where we can support each other as we work to meet the daily challenges of rearing, guiding and teaching all our children. A brief, family bio is required and will be requested on all pending memberships. This bio will also be used as an introduction to the group.

Taking a Stand in History: People, Ideas, Events

Homeschoolers are invited to participate in National History Day, a history education program for students in grades 6 through 12. By participating in History Day, students not only increase their content knowledge in history, but they improve reading, writing, research, analytical, critical thinking, and presentation skills.

Students choose a topic related to the annual theme, which for 2005-2006 is Taking a Stand in History: People, Ideas, Events. Using primary and secondary materials, they research their topics and create projects in one of four categories: historical papers, documentaries, performances, or exhibits. Each project must be accompanied by an annotated bibliography. These projects can be entered into competitions, beginning at the district level. Winning projects continue to advance, culminating with the national competition held in College Park, Maryland in June.

For more information visit the web site at www.ah.dcr.state.nc.us and click on North Carolina History Day; or contact the state coordinator, who is happy to answer questions and provide curriculum materials to teachers.
